They say that you are the average of the people with whom you spend the most time. So take a minute and think about your close friends. Do they actively encourage you to reach your goals? Are their goals similar to yours? Do you feel motivated and inspired to try new things after being around them?
Life is no different. We’re all running this marathon called life, and our fellow runners can be powerful forces for good in helping us reach our goals. At Proverbs 27:17, the Bible says that “As iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens his friend.” So how can we sharpen each other?
Tell your tribe your goals. The #1 reason people quit on their goals is that there are no real consequences for their inaction. But once you’ve communicated them to another person, you’ve just upped your commitment. Write them down. Get them out of your head so they’re not just a wish. In fact, if you’re really daring, post your goals on social media.
Your tribe can also empower you by joining you on your fitness journey. Do you find it difficult to find the self-discipline to workout on your own regularly? Then find a workout partner. Make specific dates to meet at the gym and work out together. Or meet your friend for a hike, bike ride, or walk.
If you need a little extra motivation, then hire a personal trainer or take group fitness classes. These days there are classes for all fitness levels and styles - from barre and dance to kickboxing and High Fitness (my personal favorite!). After a while, you’ll notice that the positive peer pressure from regular class participants and instructors will keep you motivated to stay the course.
And lastly, announce your progress! This may difficult for us if we don’t want to feel like we’re bragging. But tracking your progress has the power to not only keep you motivated and accountable, but may also encourage others to follow your lead.
So, whom are you empowering by your example?
