Relax Like Your Life Depends on It

Stress is the body’s natural reaction to a challenge or demand. Sometimes referred to as “fight or flight response”, acute stress can actually benefit us, as it helps us avoid danger, perform a difficult task, or successfully meet a deadline. Our body was designed to respond to stress in a way that allows us to meet the challenge. Our pulse rate increases, our muscles tense, and oxygen flow increases. All of these internal reactions allow us to react quickly to a perceived emergency or perform at a higher level. But then once the stressor is gone, our body systems return to normal.

Chronic stress, on the other hand, can be deadly and will certainly hinder your health and lifestyle goals. It can lead to emotional eating, poor sleep, headaches, irritability, and the adoption of more sedentary behaviors. Chronic stress negatively affects essential body systems, such as digestion, immunity, and reproduction. Mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are frequently associated with chronic stress. Over time, chronic stress can also lead to serious health issues, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

In order to achieve a healthier lifestyle, learning to manage stress is a must. But for many of us, this is much easier said than done. Stress management is an ongoing endeavor and requires some forethought and planning.

The following are a few tips you can integrate into your weekly routine that will help you to relax.

ESSENTIAL OILS CAN HELP
Our sense of smell is the most direct and powerful pathway to our emotions. Think about that smile that comes across your face when you smell a familiar scent from childhood—the smell of freshly baked cookies, your favorite flower, or for me, the scent of old, musty furniture. (It reminds me of playing in my best friend Heidi's basement when I was little.)

Young Living has created oil blends designed to lower stress and help you relax. My two all-time favorites are Stress Away, which also comes in a roller blend and luxurious bath bombs, and Peace and Calming, which also comes in a roller blend.

CAN'T SHUT OFF YOUR BRAIN?
If you constantly worry or have trouble relaxing at night, you might have a Cortisol issue. Cortistop is a natural supplement from Young Living that can help.
